Although Ontario is one of the top producing Black Bear regions of North America, the potential of this natural resource has not yet been fully recognized by Ontario sportsmen. Each year our American neighbours eagerly take to our northern woods in search of this shy and elusive quarry, bringing with them much appreciated revenues for nearby communities. When they leave, they take good memories and many trophy bruins. Many of these trophies are recorded in The Big Game Records of Ontario.
As a rule, many resident hunters have not ventured into the woods, in large numbers, to pursue the Black Bear. As a result, the number of bears in the Record book are less than the other two species even though the trophy potential is very high. When talking about big bears, most hunters will quote the weight of their bears but in actuality, true trophy status is based on the size of the skull.
