MOOSE RECORDS
The Largest Member of the Deer Family
While there is much talk of various subspecies of moose, the Boone and Crockett Club, the foremost authority on big-game animals, only recognizes the Shiras, Canadian and Alaska-Yukon subspecies. The moose found in Ontario fall into the Canada moose subspecies.
Moose in Ontario are larger than a Shiras Moose found in the Northwestern United States and they are smaller than the Alaska-Yukon Moose. The antlers of the Ontario, or Canada Moose, tend to be slightly narrower than their Alaska-Yukon cousins with more defined tines along the top of the palm. Large Ontario bulls have been known to weigh up to 1400 pounds.
